چکیده
Electron-multiplying charge-coupled devices are efficient imaging for low-surface-brightness ultraviolet astronomy from space. The large amplification allows photon counting (PC), the detection of events versus nonevents. This paper provides statistics observation process, photon-counting and compression. expression signal-to-noise PC is written in terms polygamma function. optimal exposure time a function clock-induced charge. exact distribution process simple-to-compute powered matrix. cutoff comparing to read noise close strong weak electron-multiplying gain rate. Novel method for identifying the cause of inherent ageing in Electron Multiplying Charge Coupled Devices
The charge multiplication process used in the Electron Multiplying CCD (EMCCD) is subject to an ageing effect in which the gain achieved at particular avalanche potentials, gradually decreases during operation. To utilise these devices for both space and terrestrial applications where recalibration of the gain is not feasible, a comprehensive understanding of the ageing process is required. A c...
متن کاملThe Noise Performance of Electron Multiplying Charge-Coupled Devices at soft X-ray energies
The use of EM-CCDs for high resolution soft Xray spectroscopy has been proposed in previous studies and the analysis that followed identified and verified experimentally a Modified Fano Factor for X-ray detection using an Fe X-ray source. However, further experiments with soft X-rays at 1000 eV were less successful, attributed to excessive split events. More recently, through the use of a deep ...
متن کاملOptimum Signal-to-noise Ratio Performance of Electron Multiplying Charge Coupled Devices
Electron multiplying charge coupled devices (EMCCDs) have revolutionized the world of low light imaging by introducing on-chip multiplication gain based on the impact ionization effect in the silicon. They combine the sub-electron readout noise with high frame rates. Signal-to-noise Ratio (SNR) is an important performance parameter for low-light-level imaging systems. This work investigates the...

Computer simulation of charge transport in GaAs resistive-gate charge-coupled devices is reported. The simulation has been performed for 10 /1-m finger spacings, doping concentrations in the range of I X 10_1 X 10 cm -3, effective channel thicknesses 0.1-1.0 ,urn, lateral applied fields 3-10 kV/cm, and charge packet sizes 5%-100% offull bucket capacity. Inhibition of charge packet broadening du...
